Coffee Burgers with a Smoky BBQ Sauce

Coffee Burgers with a Smoky BBQ Sauce

Preparation: 15 minutes

Cooking: +-10 minutes

Ready in: +- 20 minutes
Variations: None

Servings: 2 to 4
Tips: For a smoky, flame-grilled flavour, grill the burger patties over an open fire. Lightly toast the inside of the rolls to prevent the bread from getting soggy.

INGREDIENTS

750g minced beef (non-lean)

1 small red onion, roughly chopped

2 garlic cloves, crushed

1 egg

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

4 fresh hamburger bread rolls, sliced

Toppings:

Cheddar cheese, sliced

Red onion, sliced

Wild rocket leaves

Coffee rub:

2 Tbsp coffee, ground

1 Tbsp sugar

1 tsp Spanish smoked paprika

1 tsp mustard powder

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp ground ginger

1/2 tsp chilli powder

1 Tbsp freshly ground black pepper

Smoky BBQ Sauce:

3/4 cup tomato sauce

1/3 cup beef stock

2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1/2 tsp Spanish smoked paprika

1/2 tsp mustard powder

1/2 tsp chilli powder

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1/2 tsp hickory liquid smoke (optional)

METHOD

  1. Using your hands, combine the minced beef in a bowl with the onion, garlic and egg and generously season with salt and black pepper.
  1. Divide the mince into 4 parts and roll each piece into a ball, then form into flat patties roughly 10cm wide and about 2cm thick.
  1. In a small bowl, combine all the coffee rub spices together.
  1. Lightly coat the burger patties in olive oil and generously apply the coffee rub.
  1. In the meantime, combine all the BBQ sauce ingredients in a medium size bowl and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Set aside.
  1. Heat a griddle pan on a medium-high heat, brush with a splash of oil and cook patties for 3 or 4 minutes on each side or to your liking. Use a spatula to lightly press down on them, making sure each burger is in full contact with the pan.
  1. Build your burgers by topping the rolls with smoky BBQ sauce, coffee coated patties, cheddar cheese, red onion and fresh, peppery rocket leaves.
